I started learning the singing seriously in April 2024 and was curious to see how my practice routines have changed over time.
As expected, the routine has become more diverse with more practice, but not in a linear way.

I guess it is never too late to start learning and growing.
Robert Marchand got back on a bike at 67, an age when many think their best years are over.
He kept going. At 100 he rode 100 km in 4 hours 17 minutes. At 105 he set a world record for his age group.
What work actually looks like.
One random week at my job: 66 sessions. The typical one lasted 24 minutes.
I guess I'm not the only one who switches context that often. It's nothing to boast about, but it's true.
For those interested in the subject of learning, here are a few interesting studies that may offer a fresh perspective on learning. See the thread below:
7. Carrell & West (2010)
Students were randomly assigned to professors. Professors who raised scores in their own course got better evaluations.
Their students then did worse in the advanced courses that followed.
What looks like good teaching can hurt learning later.
8. David, Vassena & Bijleveld (2024), The unpleasantness of thinking
170 studies, 4,670 people: the more mental effort a task takes, the more unpleasant it feels. Education level made no difference.
If learning feels hard, that says nothing about you.
Studying and working are two very different things. Looking at my work data, I realized that a lunch break didn't really exist for me as a student. It came with my job at the university in 2015.
By 2016 I was working at 12:30 on only 28% of workdays. Then Covid blurred it.
How long does one learning session actually take? I wondered, so I looked at my time log.
848 retrieval practice sessions since June 2023. The typical one lasts 32 minutes, and half of them fall between 18 and 52 minutes.

Feel like you've wasted your effort?
Ludolph van Ceulen spent most of his life getting pi to 35 decimal places. Newton, at 23, calculated pi in a few days.
The 35 digits are on van Ceulen's tombstone anyway.
A 2024 meta-analysis (David, Vassena & Bijleveld) found that mental effort is strongly linked to negative feelings, whatever the field or education level.
In my own data, about 9 out of 10 learning sessions felt good. But that's my free-time learning. Work might look different.
