@BasedBrett comes out of Matt Furie's Boys' Club, the same underground comic that gave the internet Pepe. Somebody turned him into a token on February 24, 2024, as a fan tribute, half a year after Base opened to the public.
The launch left nothing for insiders to sit on. 85% of the supply went straight into the liquidity pool, 10% to a treasury and 5% to an exchange wallet. The contract was renounced so nobody could change the rules later, and the liquidity was locked for a year. Nothing was reserved for a presale, so all 9,91B tokens that exist are already circulating.
A takeover on X pushed Brett's mentions up 206% in a month. The market cap climbed from roughly $4M in late February 2024 to $1B by June, the first memecoin on Base to get there, and Dogecoin had needed years to reach that number. By December it was above $2,1B and the seventh-largest memecoin anywhere, past solana:ukHH6c7mMyiWCf1b9pnWe25TSpkDDt3H5pQZgZ74J82 and closing on
$BONK.
Coinbase's CEO gave it a nod with a profile picture change, and Matt Furie referenced the character himself this summer.
A comic character who mostly dances and plays video games ended up as the unofficial face of Coinbase's chain 💙
