Add my name to the list of people confused about the treatment of @NEWSneil following a post he made which included a video of what happened to him on his way to a religious service. I may not have all the facts, but I know this: Normally when a journalist witnesses a news story live they are encouraged to record it. If there was an issue with how Neil subsequently posted or framed the material, surely a simple, “Next time, run it past an editor,” could suffice. However, Israel-Palestinian stories do — and always have — made many people at CBC News extremely cautious. There is considerable discomfort with the controversy and criticism that often follows a broadcast or publication. In my view, that caution has consequences. Too much CBC coverage of this extraordinarily important story has been light, or so carefully constructed that it ends up being neither particularly interesting nor enlightening. Or worse, distorts the actual story. Whatever happened in Neil’s case, I hope proportionality and good editorial judgment prevail.

Let’s show list of all his fellow CBC peers who have publicly stuck up for him so @CBCNews can see he has a lot of support from important people with lot of clout. I’m sure @NEWSneil would very much appreciate any backing from @acoyne @althiaraj @ChantalHbert @adriearsenault @Ron_MacLean et al.

The threats of violence against nine Islamic schools across Canada, including in Mississauga, are absolutely reprehensible. I condemn them unequivocally. Islamophobia is a disgrace. To Muslim communities in Mississauga and across our country: I stand with you. Those responsible must be held accountable. We must confront this hatred firmly and protect every community’s Charter rights to express their faith freely.

I think it is important to remember that most violent actions against Muslims and Jews come from far-right supremacists. In Canada, our communities have traditionally been allies fighting for multiculturalism and secular institutions.
