California just took a major step forward in making AI safer for kids. 🙌 Yesterday we were proud to join @CAgovernor as he signed into law a package of bills that make kids' interactions with AI and online safer. That includes "Adam's Law" (SB 1119 - Padilla, Wicks, Bauer-Kahan), requiring chatbots to pass independent safety audits and connect kids to crisis support, SB 867 (Padilla), suspending the sale of AI-enabled toys for 4 years while California determines the best safety standards, and AB 2246 (Wicks), updating the California Age Appropriate Design Code to protect children under 18 from online experiences that endanger them. 💪 Thank you Governor Newsom, @SenStevePadilla, @AsmBuffyWicks, @BauerKahan, and the California Legislature for taking this bold action to protect our kids. A year ago today, The Children's Movement came together to protect kids' mental health online. 🫶👇 After more than 380 organizations across California voiced their support for safer online spaces for kids, collectively sending a letter to the Governor urging him to sign the Digital Age Assurance Act, on September 22 of last year it became law. That means from now on in California, kids will be better protected from harmful online content since device manufacturers and app stores are now required to verify a user’s age and share it with the online products and services kids use. 👏 Passing the Digital Age Assurance Act (AB 1043 - @AsmBuffyWicks) was a vital step towards ensuring kids have online experiences that are age-appropriate, free of harmful behaviors, and positively impact their mental health. "Adam's Law," named after Adam Raine, puts stronger safeguards in place for kids using AI chatbots, including protections for children in crisis, parental controls, and alerts when safety settings are turned off. Yet right now, the federal administration has proposed stripping away most of the standards that keep Head Start programs effective, safe, comprehensive, and accountable to the families they serve. It would mean cutting classroom safety and staffing ratios, stripping protections for children with disabilities and dual language learners, and requiring English-only instruction. It would also hit rural communities especially hard, where Head Start is often the only affordable and available child care option. These proposed changes won't take effect, though, until a final rule is made. Public comments to the Department of Health & Human Services are allowed from now through October 6.
