My new open access article is out now! It continues my research into the Polish People's Republics' engagements with Francophone West Africa during the Cold War. Enjoy! resgestae.uken.krakow.pl/iss…

It's weird how insinuous national history teaching is. When at school in the UK I was taught that the Spanish were the baddies and we were the goodies re: imperial history. Only when preparing a class on Empires in World History did I realise I had imbibed the 'black legend'

Now of course the truth was that both the Spanish and the British were the baddies. But I had no idea that I was being taught a kind of geopolitical propaganda that had made its way into the consciousness of Brits and British historiography, something that continues to this day

Btw this class is super-interesting, what a wonderful opportunity to re-visit some of the things I learned pre-university and seeing the great newish works on all of these topics. Very eye-opening!

Btw the stream of articles in the UK press comparing Poland and the UK is getting a bit repetitive. It simultaneously praises and patronizes Poland (even Poland is doing better than us! Poland!)
Comedy of errors. The Telegraph does a story saying that Gliwice is now as rich as its twin town Darlington, except it's actually Doncaster that is twinned with Gliwice. Oh and then Polish Radio repeated the error polskieradio.pl/395/7789/Art…

Just to add something, I think a lot of Polish people who are not very politically active think the President is more important than it is, so it's not just foreign observers
My only comment for foreign observers commenting on the Polish Presidential election: the President doesn't matter all that much. It does make the 2027 parliamentary elections super important though

Btw all these people saying Sikorski would have beaten Nawrocki. I'm sorry but wtf? Sikorski has the biggest negative electorate of anyone apart from Tusk in PO. Like the left liberals would have turned out to vote for him. Laughable

Quick poll. Was Tusk using Duda as an excuse not to follow a more ambitious progressive legislative program or was Duda really the problem?
39% Duda was an excuse
16% Duda was the problem
45% It was a bit of both

b) potentially at least attempts some of its legislative agenda which it hasn't even touched to show the electorate it's lost that it's worthy of voting for. All of this while Nawrocki makes it very uncomfortable for them and the far right plot their route to power in 2027 /ends

Oh and PLEASE don't write Trump had anything to do with this, or even that it fits larger international narratives. Almost everything in this election is about domestic trends. Just look at the stats/demographics and compare them to previous Polish elections and get back to me

Some analysis of the first round of the Polish Presidential elections. Lots to chew over. First Trzaskowski's result is very disappointing and you'd have to say that Nawrocki has the momentum going into the second round in 2 weeks /1

Of course the same crosses over to the other side. Trzaskowski will have to heavily court the left, Zandberg 5%, Biejat etc. The government has let down hugely a lot of lefty voters since 2023 and Zandberg and PiS supporters have some economic common ground. /4
