OTTB/Equine Advocate. Racehorses have earned a dignified retirement, and we owe it to them. All views are my own.

Two things can be true at once. I deeply love Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 and its people. We raised our son there, built friendships there, and became part of the community. It is one of the most breathtaking places in the world, filled with resilient, resourceful, and incredibly generous people. At the same time, I can love the island while speaking out against the way parts of the horse racing industry treat horses. Criticizing the actions of a small subset of people is not a criticism of Puerto Rico or Puerto Ricans as a whole. In fact, I speak up because I care so deeply about the island and the animals within it. Many people in Puerto Rico feel the same way. You can love a place and its people while also believing we should, and can, do better for animals.

WAY too often the OTTB adopter is left out of the conversation. They’re the ones who take on the financial burden of lifetime care for these horses and ALL of the racing related wear and tear that comes with them. tiktok.com/t/ZP8TB2ocE/

Please take a moment to vote for St. Rose for the Miss Mareworthy Pageant. So many of you may remember her as a rescue from Stroud auction in OK back in 2023. She is a gem! Please read her story 💓 mareworthymatch.com/mare/st-…

This is very concerning. No one knows where they’re taking these horses and what is happening with them. Caribbean Equine Advocacy is trying to get to the bottom of this. *** also they are NOT “wild”’horses. They are domesticated horses that had owners, were bred by people and then abandoned.

St. Thomas - 🥹 little to no regulation, very limited aftercare (one org on a one acre lot). Grandstand lit up while the horses live in dark wet stables. Nice. And WHERE do the horses come from????? They purchase non competitive horses from Puerto Rico. Gets worse…when horses are euthanized - they get dumped in the local landfill.

I’m deeply, deeply disappointed that Equine Rescue of Aiken would hire Shannon Echols. After what happened to Cobain, she does NOT deserve a second chance around animals. If she were a thoroughbred race trainer, people would be losing their minds she was allowed around horses…surely there are more qualified people available.

Seems like a solid, welfare minded move.

I thought this was really interesting. Based on my euthanasia data and race frequency at Camarero - if this were the norm, it would vastly reduce deaths.
Condition books that are trying to fill races at your average racetrack write similar conditions about every 28 days. That’s about an ideal rhythm. Reality nowadays probably says once every 45 days is a good goal.

Thousands of Puerto Ricans have been without running water for 120 days. Meanwhile the racetrack is consuming 70,000-190,000+ gallons/day. If the humans on the island don’t have water - is it ethical and responsible to have horse racing?

I still volunteer with @CaribbeanOTTB - mostly just occasionally helping with data. I pulled a report on the students they’ve had through their equine academy - they have served over 196 students across SIXTY THREE municipalities across Puerto Rico. These grass roots efforts are HUGE! 👏👏👏 well done you guys!!!

The guy in the black shirt, Oscar Diaz, owned Mishegas. He crippled Mishegas, and when advocates were finally able to get the horse retired, he bounced the donation check of $1500 to Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare for his flight and never made good on it. Made my day. Can’t run from Karma…

Stamps are 82¢ now. Meanwhile, aftercare organizations are still mailing heavy grant packets that require 2+ stamps each. Can we finally move these applications online? Our budget belongs to the animals, not the post office! 🦙✉️ #NonprofitLife #GoDigital

This Veterinarian, could single handedly have the greatest welfare impact on horses in Puerto Rico. I would imagine any licensed vet would be considered but would need to pass PR licensing…if there is someone out there who really wants to make a difference this could be an amazing opportunity.
