Here at Galadriel, we are building a different kind of AI. Instead of a Dark Lord, it will be a queen. Not dark but beautiful and terrible as the dawn! Tempestuous as the sea, and stronger than the foundations of the earth! All shall love it and despair!

I agree with this take, and the replies to it are quite...revealing. Too many men seem to have based their understanding of "how women will react" on inflammatory social media videos that have few or no real-life analogues...
talking to guy friends about this, i’ve realised that some of the most respectful men i know are very hesitant to ask women out directly. they’re afraid of making someone uncomfortable and often have very few models for what good courtship actually looks like i think there’s an education gap here. a lot of the explicit advice available to men is PUA-adjacent and often terrible, while the thoughtful men who might actually model this well tend to stay far away from dating discourse because it’s such an unruly place of course we’re all fumbling our way through intimacy, but i do think the cultural shifts of the last decade left some men especially uncertain about initiation and what women actually want from them women can probably help close this gap too, by speaking more directly about how we actually like to be approached, and by being careful not to shame men simply for expressing interest respectfully. every time someone is socially punished for a sincere attempt, other people watching learn that initiation itself is dangerous ideally there should be very little social cost to respectfully asking someone out. she can say no, then you can take it gracefully, and everyone moves on. in many cases it should register for what it is, a sincere compliment that someone found you interesting enough to risk vulnerability the unfortunate selection effect otherwise is that the men most worried about being respectful become the most inhibited, while the men least concerned with making women uncomfortable continue initiating freely. all the wrong sensitive men get discouraged i wish more wise older men talked publicly about how they learned to pursue women with kindness and respect, and more women spoke plainly about what respectful pursuit actually feels like from our side. i think younger people need both sets of stories

i think the sea change is so exciting and speaking as a new millennial parent, i've never felt more motivated to find ways to reduce my own smartphone use. it’s also made me far more alert to how many aspects of our society have eliminated the non-smartphone option. (i can’t print out tickets I’ve purchased anymore; I have to download an app to enter a sporting event or concert, etc) the pressure is rightfully on k12 schools right now but i think there's a lot of room to push to unwind some of the app-only trends governments and companies have adopted over the last decade that shape how adults navigate the world. (which obviously also have been exclusionary/difficult for a lot of people!) nytimes.com/2026/08/27/style…

I've worked in many "pluralism" spaces promoting "dialogue across difference." Class difference is always the elephant in the room -- the real differentiator of worldview, far more than religion frankly. But no one feels incentivized to bridge that divide. It's not flattering.
new piece in the Times today, about friendship as a luxury good. "We tend to talk about the loneliness crisis in terms of gender, but class, as derived from educational status, is the factor too touchy — or too invisible — to acknowledge." nytimes.com/2026/08/19/opini…

The US loves to boast about how wealthy it is, but its wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few oligarchs. US oligarchs are so insanely rich that they make average wealth seem very high. But *median* wealth in the US is lower than in Slovenia & Portugal, and half of Italy's
Surprising (not really) stat from the new UBS Global Wealth Report 2026. The US ranks #2 when you look at average (mean) wealth per adult, but drops to #28 when you look at the median. ubs.com/content/dam/assets/w…
