Every GIF search in Discord, WhatsApp, and Bluesky ran through one service. Google owns it. On June 30, they're shutting it down. Tenor's website and app are still running. What Google killed is the technology connecting Tenor's GIF library to every other app on the internet. When that goes dark in 11 days, apps that haven't switched will show nothing where GIFs used to be. Google bought Tenor in March 2018, when it had 300 million monthly users and 12 billion GIF searches a month. Its rival Giphy was valued at $1 billion at the time. Google promised to invest in Tenor's technology and partnerships. Eight years later, on January 13, Google announced it would immediately stop new connections and shut everything down by June 30. The official reason: redirecting resources toward "enhancing the main Tenor experience." The service was always free and made Google no money. Google ran it primarily for its own apps, with apps outside Google treated as secondary. When cost cuts hit starting in 2023, a free GIF service with no revenue became an easy target. Discord spent months testing Giphy and Klipy as replacements. WhatsApp already finished migrating. Bluesky has a public thread for developers to coordinate the same move. Klipy is where most apps are landing. One of its founders is Frank Nawabi, who built Tenor and sold it to Google in 2018. On June 17, two days ago, Klipy raised $3.8 million. Google's own AI Futures Fund was among the investors. The man who built Tenor, sold it to Google, and watched Google kill it is now running the replacement. Google is funding him again.
