US and Greece already cooperate extensively through NATO channels. What makes the visit strategically interesting is the broader positioning. Greece has quietly become America's most reliable military partner in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The MOU itself is a win for both sides. Greece gets tighter security ties at a moment when migration remains a major issue, while the U.S. deepens its footprint with a NATO ally that actually wants it there.

This wasn’t just another generic speech about Democracy, filotimo, or Greek yogurt.
Beyond the incredible visuals, what Marco Rubio did today, is draw a lineal connection between Greece, Rome, the current state of Greece, and The United States of America. He reminded us that we are the heirs of the flame of Western civilization, and just like that flame was in danger of being extinguished during multiple periods of history, it is in danger of going out today too.
He values the alliance between Greece, Cyprus, and the US, and Rubio doesn’t just talk the talk. He was always one of the Hellenic Caucus’ most trusted confidants in the Senate, and even co-authored the Eastern Mediterranean Security and Energy Partnership Act alongside Senator Bob Menendez.
This didn’t just look like a Secretary of State out there today. It looked like a future President and leader of the Western World.
Greek-American community, this is our guy.
