We have been building on @MetaMask Smart Accounts Kit since it first launched to help build secure, predictable crypto use into existing agent frameworks like @NousResearch Hermes Agent and @openclaw This post is a deep dive into the technical underpinnings of our stack 🪽

Clawnch X Account Incident: Full Retrospective Early Friday morning we received an email claiming a DMCA complaint against our new logo. It appeared to come from a legitimate X address — almost certainly spoofed headers. We clicked the link. That was the breach, and it's on us. We caught it within minutes and got the account password changed. The attacker still managed to add a passkey, but the password change had already cut them off from changing the account email or taking any of the other steps that make recovery difficult. We contacted X Support immediately and filed the correct class of ticket. Friday afternoon, X responded and asked us to make a login attempt — the attempt would trigger a notification on their end and allow them to remove the passkey. We did. Then we waited four days. About 90 minutes ago, they confirmed the passkey was finally removed. What the attackers did: The scam ran on two tracks. First, scam coins. They promoted a series of them from our account. The account happened to be under a temporary shadowban at the time, so those posts barely got any views or engagement. We traced the coins to other compromised project accounts pushing the same ones. From an alt account, we quote-tweeted every post we could catch with a warning that it was a scam (comments were disabled on them, and they were obviously suspicious). Second, a fake Clawnch airdrop page. That took them time to put together, and by the time it went live, most of our followers already knew the account was compromised. We did everything we could to spread the word that it wasn't us. Despite that, we've had two reports of possible wallet compromises connected to the fake airdrop. If you were affected, please get in touch and share the relevant transactions. Every data point goes into the dossier we're building on the attackers, and we'll do our best to help make it right. What we did while locked out: Wiped the compromised device and replaced it with a new one. Ran a full security sweep of every Clawnch social and developer account: passwords changed, API keys rotated, 2FA replaced. What we did once access was restored: Accessed the account from the fresh machine, changed the password again, set up new 2FA, removed a delegate account the attacker had added, removed all connected apps, and rotated every API key. We also collected what we could on the attackers, including an IP address, which we're handing to X along with everything else gathered over the past four days. We're still tracking their wallets and related accounts. The dossier goes to law enforcement in the country we believe they're operating from, in West Asia. On the timing: This landed immediately after our launch on Robinhood Chain, and we don't think that's a coincidence. The attack was sophisticated and deliberately timed to capitalize on the renewed attention around the project. We're sorry. You showed up for a launch and got scam posts from our own account. We hope this full account of the response earns back some of your trust. Access is secure, every credential we control has been rotated, and the hunt doesn't stop here — we will keep tracking this hacking ring as they compromise further accounts and have already alerted authorities in their home country with what we know so far. As for Clawnch: it's back to building.
