In a pivotal move, the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission adopted rules that could force large companies to disclose both emissions and the climate-related risks they face. Though expected to encounter legal hurdles, this marks a hopeful step towards corporate climate responsibility. Here’s a quick dive into what’s unfolding ⬇️ The new SEC rules aim to illuminate the risks climate change poses to companies and how they contribute to it, offering investors insights to drive business changes for a cooler planet. Originally proposing a focus on Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, the rule now, after feedback, mainly requires disclosures deemed 'material' to companies, notably scaling back on Scope 3 emissions due to industry pushback, reports Abigail Bassett. Despite the rule's evolution, reflecting thousands of comments and a rigorous debate, it signifies a significant stride towards aligning the U.S. with global standards on climate disclosures, amidst a backdrop of legal and political contention. States are suing, Congress is in a tug-of-war, and environmentalists argue for more stringent measures. The conversation on climate accountability is heating up, and these new SEC rules are right at the center. What do you think? Do these rules go far enough? Before we had blue bins and sorting stations, human beings were recycling. When garbage collection began in the late 19th century, workers sorted through refuse bound for the landfill and those things that were reusable. Then plastics came on the scene and became more widely used in the 1960s and 70s because they were cheap, easy to manufacture, sanitary, and, in theory, disposable or recyclable. It turns out that the last part about plastic being recyclable is, in fact, a lie. A recent report revealed that plastics producers have lied to the public about recycling for over thirty years. The report from the The Center for Climate Integrity underscores the dire fact that only about 9% of plastics actually get recycled, while the other 91% end up in landfills or are incinerated, resulting in a whole variety of plastic pollution and toxic air pollution all over the world. Some of this stems from the fact that the plastics industry has created a highly lucrative market for oil and gas industries, both of which have powerful global lobbying arms–so powerful that plastic producers are even working their way into schools to change the narrative around plastics. A few weeks ago, the former White House Chief of Staff Sam Cass held a “Last Supper,” in Minneapolis to highlight the foods that could change or completely disappear from the planet in the next few years thanks to the warming globe and climate change. Foods like chocolate, coffee, champagne, oysters, salmon, and core foods such as corn, wheat, soy, rice, and potatoes could be deeply affected by the global rise in temperature, with some estimates showing that global production could be substantially reduced by 2050, reports @AbigailBassett. Wiley Webb, the CEO and co-founder of Permanent, says it's not just warming that's impacting these crops either, but growing regions, rainfall, and storm strength, too. "The fresh foods industry is always moving. You'll read about a weather event here causing issues, in say, the supply of limes, but the backup region where we normally pull limes from this time of year is also having a major weather event, and the crop from another region, even farther away, just isn't ready yet." While solutions to the possible disappearance of our most valuable crops may yet come from the climate tech space, @jettrecruitsgeo at @RegrowAg underlined that time is of the essence when finding ways to prevent it. “We now have seven growing seasons left, before we hit the 1.5 degrees centigrade threshold,” Metcalf told Climatebase. “And while agriculture is still one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gas emissions, it's also very much one of the largest pressure points for climate change.” Read the full report at Climatebase.
