The players who arrive already treating the work as a privilege instead of an obligation are the ones the coaches describe, years later, at the banquet. It is a switch a family can flip years early, and most never flip at all.

How a Division I head coach teaches team accountability, position by position: my shortstop needs to beat their shortstop, routine plays, moving runners, quality at-bats, communication, energy. My catcher has to match their catcher and beat him. That is Rardin's individual scoreboard, and it works at every age: your son does not have to win the game. He has to win his position.

Today’s MLB managers are nothing like the ones who came before them.
They’re figureheads now ,executing a daily game plan put in place by the analytics staff and front office.
Gone are the days of Joe Torre, Bobby Cox, Jim Leyland, Clint Hurdle, and Tony La Russa. Those guys managed with their eyes and their instincts. The locker room was theirs. Lineups, roster moves, and in-game decisions came from feel and experience.
Most of that is handled upstairs now. Sad, the sport is more than computers and spread sheets!

Marc Rardin runs a definition module on the word work. A player says: I did everything you asked. His answer: Well , this is baseball. That is just practice. The 30 swings plus 50 before, plus 50 after. There is a sign in their hitting facility: those who hit often hit. Ask your son tonight what his definition of work is. Then ask what the sign would say about him.

There's a generational exceptionalism in baseball that didn't exist when I was growing up or when I played. The belief that the current generation is better than those that came before them is missing baseball wisdom. Hitters hit, pitchers pitch.
The stuff or athleticism might look better, but the cream always rises to the top. Stuff & athleticism are nice, but actual baseball skills (pitching & hitting the ball) are still needed to play the game well.
True hitters excel because of their approach and execution of that approach. True pitchers excel because of their ability to identify the hitter's exploitable areas. This has not (and will never) change about the game.
