Payton Pritchard on coming off the bench "I feel like sometimes young players get so caught up in worrying about what the outside people think rather than just controlling what you can control and when you play, be the best player in those minutes.”

Kelvin Sampson says the team has no distractions: “I think the last eight years, we’ve won about 240-something games. It’s because we have no distractions. We’re consistent. The one thing about this program is our consistency.” “I don’t recruit problems. I learned a long time ago — if you don’t want problems then don’t recruit them. It’s not an accident that we have great kids.” “If I don’t want to coach them, then that means I don’t mind coaching against them. And a lot of the guys we take, I don’t mind coaching against them. Check our record.”

Joe Mazzulla on reports of the Celtics vibes being high at training camp "Every team you lead is the most together team right now. Because we haven't traveled. No one's gotten benched. No one's been on a losing streak. No one's gotten blamed in the media. No one's had to go stand in the corner for 10 minutes and not get the ball. So, you learn those things as the season goes on, and you just learn how to work through those things together. And you can't simulate those. It just comes with time. And so, right now I would say all 30 teams feel great about themselves, and we got to wait till adversity hits. And adversity is even a strong word. There's nothing really adverse about playing in the NBA. But we got to wait until stuff doesn't go your way, and then you got to figure out who we are and how we're going to be at our best." Isiah Thomas says they didn't run any plays at Indiana because they were the most connected team, and the quality he appreciates most about Bob Knight is that Knight had the courage to coach him “The thing that I loved about Coach Knight… Now that I’m older… Is that he had the courage to coach me. He had the courage…To have confrontation with me.” “He had the courage… To make me do right… When I wanted to be wrong.” “He didn’t let me slide. He didn’t let me get by. It would have been easier for him to do that… Because I was pretty good at the time.” “He would tell me, you’ve got to go to class. If you don’t go to class… You can’t come to practice.” “In terms of freedom, we had no plays at Indiana. We didn't have an out of bounds play. We weren't coming down calling a play. It was like, you've got to get to know your teammate. And once you know your teammate, then you'll know if he's going left or right.” “That was the way Bob Knight made you think and play... He always said it's a thinking man's game. Mental is to physical as 4 is to 1.”

🚨 One of the best players I covered all summer. Gavin Peck (@gavinpeckk) 6'3 G | @boys_champion | 2028 | 4.0 GPA AAU: @SAFutureBB 17U Some players dominate the ball. Gavin dominates possessions. One of the most efficient scorers I watched this summer, he consistently found ways to produce without needing a high volume of touches. His movement, shot selection, cutting, and feel for the game allow him to impact winning every time he's on the floor. What stood out just as much was his motor. He competes on both ends, rebounds his position, makes the extra pass, defends with purpose, and never takes possessions off. A high academic prospect whose production and effort translate to winning basketball. His stock should continue to rise. 📈 @PRO16League Live Periods @RcsSports @AlamoCityHoops1 @GASOBlue @GASOTim @mtimminshoops @KevinOneEye @GASOLyndon @djones8301 @PUSHExposure @GDayHoopScout @324Sports_

Mike D'Antoni's advice to aspiring NBA head coaches was surprisingly simple. "You have to have the bond between the coaches and you have to invest time in that." The culture your players experience is often a reflection of the culture your staff experiences. If your coaches don't trust one another...If they don't enjoy being around one another...If they aren't connected... Don't expect your players to magically create what the staff hasn't modeled. Culture doesn't start in the player's locker room. It starts in the coaches' room. 📹: Win More, Live Better Podcast (Ep. 265)

Kevin Garnett reveals a recruiter tried to hand him a bag of cash as a teenager until his grandma pulled out a shotgun “I got offered a lot of cash for my mother and my family to have better opportunities. To meet some of the most powerful people in the world, whatever that meant” “I had a certain recruiter come see me, and he offered me some cash in front of my grandma. And she went and got a shotgun, and told me to always set the tone with people that you could never be bought” “If you can be bought once, you can be bought always. And that stuck with me forever… The quicker she put the shotgun together, the quicker we ended the conversation” “That guy’s still around, I just wink whenever I see him, it’s just between him, myself, God and my grandmother”

The toughest teams aren't the ones with the best players, they're the ones who embrace roles, commit to defense, and sacrifice for the guy next to them. When every player is more concerned about we than me? That's when you win games, and hearts.

Nobody wants to say this out loud: Nearly 1 in 3 college athletes quit, because they lose passion for the game. Many quit after the first year, because once they get there they realize the sport has become a job. And while everyone glorifies the NCAA transfer portal, nearly 80 percent of student athletes who entered last year never found another school and “retired.” Social media has sold kids (and their parents) the dream that “D-I or bust” is the only path that matters. It’s not. JUCO. NAIA. D3. Those levels can change lives, too, by opening doors you’d never imagine. If you want to play, there’s a place for you. Sorry to say this, but playing in college is no longer a flex. Finding the RIGHT fit - not the flashiest one for clicks - is. Don’t let the ego block a road. Remember: Not every great sports story starts on ESPN or a post on social media. #MoreThanJUSTGames #IHSA
I have a gut wrenching feeling that some players are more excited about making the social media post, rather than playing in college. READ MORE: ericasuter.com/turning-down-…

Here is Mike Schmitz, who's recognized as one of th best evaluators of talent in the NBA, echoing the same thoughts I tweeted a few days ago.
Athleticism (especially vertical athleticism) is often discussed as a ceiling-raising trait, but in reality, it's closer to establishing a floor for a prospect. Processing, feel, IQ, cognition, or whatever word you want to use regarding basketball intelligence is what raises a prospect's ceiling. That’s why I struggle with the idea that the prospect with a computer for a brain has such a limited ceiling.
