Who are you on the inside?
On this date, 30 years ago, I went from high school quarterback under the Friday Night Lights of Texas, to starting D1 QB for the University of North Texas.
Against Texas A&M, no less.
At just 20 years old, I had arrived!
Growing up in Texas, I was always treated special because I could throw a football. Thatβs who I was: QB1.
That start against A&M, however, would be a fork-in-the-road of my entire life.
On the third play of the game, I was injured and never took another college snap again.
Something more critical than my career was over: my identity was gone. I had never cultivated an identity beyond football.
I was lost and then went on the biggest drug and alcohol fueled pity-party because I could not live life on Lifeβs terms.
It would be a dozen years later before I was arrested and forced to figure out who I was. I almost did not survive that lesson in life.
You canβt attach your identity to anything that can be taken away from you. Your identity cannot come from social media or social circles. Money or status wonβt clarify this for you either.
Today, my identity comes from within. My faith in God and my ability to serve others has given me the life football never could.
Be you. Be a Coffee Bean! π«
