"I've had to unlearn the tendency to beat myself up after failure...I'm going to lose. I'm going to make poor decisions that I regret later. But losing sleep over them and beating myself up is not at all productive." A lot of coaches are great at helping players recover from mistakes, but many struggle to extend that same grace to themselves. You can prepare relentlessly, care deeply, and still make decisions you wish you could take back. The question isn't whether you'll make mistakes. Every coach does. If Bird had today’s medicine back in the 80s, he’d be the undisputed GOAT. Let’s be honest. Larry Bird won 3 straight MVPs and 3 championships even though his teams weren’t stacked like his rivals. But his career got cut short. After age 31, his back injuries ruined him. With today’s medical tech, Bird could have played another 5 to 7 prime years easily. He was never athletic to begin with, so his game wouldn’t have dropped much with age. Basically, Bird was fully healthy for only 9 seasons, including his rookie year. The season before he joined, the Celtics went 29–53. Then Bird came in, and they jumped to 61–21, a 32-win improvement in his first year. He was Rookie of the Year, First Team All-NBA, 4th in MVP voting, and took a lottery team straight to the Eastern Conference Finals. That’s insane impact. Over the next six seasons, he finished: - 2nd in MVP voting three times - Won three MVPs in a row - 3rd once Then his back gave out. That was basically it. Nine healthy seasons. For comparison, in LeBron’s first nine seasons, he had one ring. Now imagine Bird with modern sports medicine, back surgery, load management, better travel, better recovery. He probably plays 14 prime years instead of 8. That’s 5 or 6 rings, 5 or 6 Finals MVPs, 5 or 6 MVPs. That’s GOAT-level stuff. In his prime, Bird had no weaknesses. Elite IQ. Passer. Defender. Rebounder. Scorer. Shooter. Clutch. Leader. Even Jordan took about 5 years to round out his game. LeBron didn’t hit full form until year 9. Bird was nearly perfect by year 2. And don’t forget impact. Bird and Magic literally saved the NBA. Before them, the Finals were on tape delay. The league had almost no fans. Bird helped make basketball cool again. Without Bird and Magic, there would be no Air Jordan era. So at worst, Bird is top 3 all-time in NBA impact. LeBron changed the player side of the game, contracts, super teams, power to players. But Bird changed the entire league and fan culture. You could even argue LeBron’s super-team era hurt the league’s competitiveness for years. Bottom line: In the future, players will have better medical care and longer primes. When we compare careers, we need to consider how much modern tech helps today’s stars.
