The reason why Obama comes to such a wrong conclusion here is that he’s starting from the wrong premise. Voters actually *don’t* want to get along with each other and live in harmony, they’re yearning to punish and humiliate whoever they think America’s internal enemies are.

Part of my political maturation has been realizing that some degree of conformity is necessary for mass politics and not everyone's feelings will be coddled all the time. If you can't hack it, feel free to try going at it alone without a movement and a community to protect you.
I think that socialist/communist spaces really do suffer from letting radical liberals come into them and set the rules. Mass politics is an anathema to radlibs and individualist narcissism ends up being framed as somehow revolutionary when it is actual poison to movements.
