The Crown Jewels have rarely left the Tower of London since 1661 yet they’re still viewed by millions of people a year. Encryption solves a different problem. It protects data in transit, but what happens once that data reaches the other end: a laptop left in a taxi, or a device gone from a desk? Collabora Online works a little closer to the Tower’s model. Over the past couple of weeks, contributors have been joining the daily calls, getting their dev environments set up, exploring the codebase, picking up Easy Hacks, and working on everything from browser clean-ups to Writer improvements. Latency has a reputation problem. When document processing happens on a server, it’s easy to assume every keystroke is taking a long trip across the internet. So we put it to the test. From Rajkot, India, to a Europe-based server and back, we measured a median round trip of 29.6ms.
