Sergeant Mary Ricard was killed when she was attacked by an offender at the Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility in Crowley, Colorado.
In August 2019, the offender, who was serving a 35-year-to-life sentence, was resentenced to life and 48 years.
Sergeant Ricard served with the Colorado Department of Corrections for nine years. She is survived by her husband and four children.
In June 2019, Colorado State Highway 207 was renamed Sgt. Mary Ricard Memorial Highway in her honor.

NOTICE: MODIFIED OPERATIONS AT CROWLEY COUNTY CORRECTIONAL FACILITY
Crowley County Correctional Facility is currently operating under modified operations while staff completes a facility-wide inventory and security sweep. At this time, everyone at the facility is accounted for, and there are no reports of injuries related to this situation.
During this time, visitation and telephone access are temporarily unavailable, and movement within the facility is limited. Our teams are working to complete this process as quickly as possible while maintaining everyone's safety and security at the facility.
We appreciate your patience and understanding. We will provide an update as normal operations resume.

Facility Update: Sterling Correctional Facility
Visiting operations for this upcoming weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) will return to the normal schedule for offenders.
Please note that the facility will remain in modified operations during this time, including limited out-of-cell and recreation time for the population.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to maintain a safe and secure environment. For standard visiting hours and guidelines, please refer to the official CDOC website or contact the facility before you start your trip.

Visitation at Sterling Correctional Facility is temporarily canceled while staff conducts a facility-wide inventory and security sweep. Standard internal movement is also temporarily restricted while this process is completed.
What You Need to Know:
Special Visits: Pre-approved special visits are proceeding as scheduled.
General Visits: Temporarily paused until the inventory review is complete.
Our teams are working to complete the sweep as efficiently as possible while maintaining the safety and security of the facility.
