His dissertation, “On the Design of Devices with Emergent Semantic Functions,” remains a touchstone in robotics and embodied cognition. Speaking at the Howard Pattee Centennial: Kalevi Kull is Professor of Biosemiotics at the University of Tartu and president of the International Society for Biosemiotic Studies. He became an admirer of Pattee after reading the volumes of Towards a Theoretical Biology. They began a correspondence in 1999, when Kull was editing a special issue of Semiotica on Jakob Uexküll. Kull met Pattee in 2008, and published part of their dialog as "A biosemiotic conversation: Between physics and semiotics," in Sign Systems Studies.

Speaking at the Howard Pattee Centennial: Claudia Carello is professor emerita at the Center for the Ecological Study of Perception and Action (CESPA) at the University of Connecticut and, briefly, was a faculty member at Binghamton University. A leader of the Ecological Psychology movement, she and her colleagues engaged with Howard Pattee over several decades, and CESPA devoted one of its annual Iberall Lectures to Pattee. His important "Cell Psychology" paper was a response to the Ecological Psychologists.
