I feel like the power of really fucking hating a band can be more useful than really loving some other band. Steely Dan changed music because they heard The Velvet Underground once and thought they were the worst shit ever. I need to find a band to hate.

I once posted this video, it went viral, and dozens of guys messaged me and told me it deeply affected them. Every year I watch his face and he’s a little less excited. Today we are celebrating another birthday and so I pulled up the video to remind myself how it looks to be absent from a moment you can’t buy back. I have never been on my phone during a birthday party since this, not even once. I won’t even video it - everyone knows that if they want a video to do it themselves. I hate that I missed this moment but it affected me so deeply and gave me so many future moments that I fiercely protect - a reasonable price to pay, I believe. I hope this can give someone out there perspective and to give them the awareness to put down the phone and live life through your eyes.
