Nearly a billion people in the world’s largest democracy are being asked to show documents to prove that they should keep the right to vote. Our sweeping look at what is behind the recent fury in India -- and what is at stake. @HariNYT @CopiousNotes27 nytimes.com/2026/10/06/world…

3 Indian sailors became casualties of a war they weren't part of. We reconstructed the final days & hours on the Settebello. Did the US go too far? Did the ship's command fail the crew? Or did both decisions lead to a tragedy? @pranavbask @EricSchmittNYT nytimes.com/2026/07/20/world…

That road, last month! The canopies are denser during the monsoons. “Every tree I plant are my children. I am alive in each of them.” nytimes.com/2026/02/06/world…
“Today, that road — once dusty and filled with parched travelers — is a green corridor lined with hundreds of towering trees that form a sprawling canopy.” @CopiousNotes27 nytimes.com/2026/02/06/world…

Human remains of Naga ancestors sat at the @Pitt_Rivers, 5000 miles away from their homeland, entertaining visitors. They could finally be making their way home to be laid to rest. But the process has been anything but simple. nytimes.com/2025/08/02/world… @DollyKikon @RRaDNagaland

How grotesque, to evoke melodramatic sentimentality, to try and convert a moment of sorrow into one of triumph and assertion.

State funding is allocated to veg sources in food security schemes like mid-day meals & PDS, while eggs & meat could provide easy nutrition to a population that lags in global hunger index. @sakie339 explained to me the pitfalls of fortified rice being pushed as an alternative.

Implications of promoting "pure vegetarianism" as a nationalist agenda? Cow slaughter ban, cow vigilantes, lynchings, banning sale of meat during Hindu festivals, house owners displaying “for vegetarians only” signs denying housing for ppl from meat-eating castes & religions+

To say one is veg is to visibly show their caste & class location. Traditionally, tribal, Dalit & Shudra agrarian communities found ways to get nutrition despite their caste & class which dictated their access to food. To term their entire food cultures impure is nonsensical.

The 1.4 billion ppl in India worship 100s of different gods. What food one’s god is offered during rituals like marriage & death ceremonies, veg or meat, pure/impure, determines the god’s hierarchy, & hence the worshiper’s too, manufacturing & perpetuating spiritual hierarchies.

That the Hindu gods were veg is a manufactured construct by the upper castes. Ramayana, Mahabharata, Vedas, none make any mention of domesticated vegetables, but only of milk, ghee & meat. That’s why, your tomato, potato, brinjal–none of them are native to India: @KanchaIlaiah

Although the current govt wants to paint the nation as "pure vegetarian," is India a veg-majority country? No. More than 90% of the population in 16 of the 30 states & UTs consume meat. In none of them is the consumption less than 20%. In 25 of them, it's more than 50%. (NFHS-5)

The issue snowballed, begging the question: why does food & the mundane act of eating elicit a strong emotional response in India? Diet is a major part of the strict notions of caste purity, with consumption of non-vegetarian food rendering them impure. Food here is political.

The incident played into the growing mistrust and discrimination against minorities in the country. The faith of Jagan Mohan Reddy, Naidu’s predecessor during whose tenure the alleged adulteration occurred, has been brought to the fore.

Naidu alleged ghee used to make the laddus was adulterated with animal fat. But the allegation was premature. While the lab report showed the presence of foreign fat in the ghee, it was unclear if it was animal fat or any of the vegetable oils that're also considered adulterants

Why Chandrababu Naidu's allegation of adulteration in Tirupati laddu is another indicator of something as mundane as food being a highly political issue in India. A person’s food culture is used to reiterate social hierarchies & inflict violence. I write: nytimes.com/2024/10/26/world…

Ppl in your 30s, hi! What is this sudden inability to pull all-nighters? Pulled 1 (one) sorta-kinda all-nighter & full day head is throbbing. All my planning, my entire life, has hinged on these all-nighters. 🥹 What's your orange to the old black all-nighters? Tell to me, pliss!
