Awesome. Made my day.
On my flight home on Friday (Ryan Manion) credit
This gentleman walked past me wearing a World War II veteran hat. I thanked him for his service as he went by, but almost immediately wished I had asked him more. So when we landed, I waited for him to get off the plane. He told me his name is George “Middy” Middlebrook. He’s 98 years old. He served 24 years in the U.S. Army, retired as a Master Sergeant (E-8), and his service spanned World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Three wars. Twenty-four years of service. We sat there for a few minutes while he told me pieces of his story, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how easily I could have just let him walk by. The World War II generation is leaving us far too quickly, and with them go stories and firsthand memories of a time that shaped our country and our world. We won’t have many more opportunities to hear directly from the men and women who lived them. There are extraordinary people all around us carrying stories we know nothing about. Sometimes all it takes is noticing the hat, asking the question, and taking a few minutes to listen.
Really grateful I waited for Middy.
