Nuclear safety risk grows at Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine as its cooling pond keeps sinking
Russia has held the plant in southern Ukraine, Europe’s largest, since 2022. The pond that cools its reactors fell to 12.27 meters on 12 October, well below the 15 meters the plant needs, Ukraine’s intelligence says.
Russia also cannot supply enough diesel for the plant’s emergency generators, and most of its specialists are gone, according to the intelligence agency. The plant hangs on one external power line, and no diesel has reached it since March, the IAEA says, warning the situation may become acute in winter.
