Dear constituents: a few thoughts this morning on property taxes and “divisiveness,” since that word is being thrown around a lot lately.
The true source of division and discord in a society often originates from those who support using government power to steal more money from those they supposedly serve… NOT from those who simply object to having more of their money (and thus, their liberty) taken from them by force.
Nothing is more unifying than liberty!
But increased taxation reduces liberty.
And that is necessarily “divisive.”
In fact, there may be nothing more “divisive” than government officials authorizing violence, imprisonment, fines, or property seizures to forcibly take more of someone’s hard earned money from them. Yet that is exactly what happens when elected officials vote to increase taxes (especially property taxes).
As Barry Goldwater famously said, “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!”
I will never apologize for fighting as hard as possible for the freedom and liberty of the community that has elected me, and that I’m honored to serve.
I took my oath and campaign promises to fight for more individual freedom and less government and taxes seriously. By exposing tax-hiking and government-growing schemes I am keeping my promises, even when it costs me.
There would have been nothing easier, after getting elected, to simply become a “yes man” for the liberal establishment, or to praise every action taken by other politicians. In politics, the rewards for doing such things are tremendous: money, accolades, fawning press coverage, leadership positions, and so on.
But doing so would violate not only my conscience, but my ability to be a voice for the people. I will not compromise on core beliefs to satisfy the powerful. I will never prioritize popularity with politicians over fighting for the people who elected me.
I will stand on principle, even if that means standing alone. And many times, it has. But the people of Texas, including the next generation of Texans, deserve nothing less.
In closing, never forget: it is those using government power to deprive the people of their God-given liberties who are the true source of “divisiveness,” not those seeking to maintain their freedoms.
For liberty,
Brian
