The military is using high-energy lasers against drones around the Strait of Hormuz, and the person firing them controls the system with a modified Xbox controller. Yes, basically the same controller people use to play Halo. The idea is pretty simple: troops already know how to use one, so why invent an entirely new control system? Jared Keller of Laser Wars said Pete Hegseth picked one up during a laser demo in New Mexico and shot down a drone after just a couple minutes of training. So apparently, the learning curve isn't much of a curve. The laser itself is invisible to the naked eye. Keep it locked on the target for long enough and the heat can melt or destroy critical parts. And compared with firing an expensive interceptor missile at every incoming drone, each laser shot costs far less. Turns out all those hours on Xbox were job training after all.
