On 13th of October, 2016, the Vie Trio from Bangkok had a studio date that had been arranged well in advance. On that day, they were able to make one of many recordings of the Thai Royal Anthem.
Nothing special.
Classical instrumentation, vocals, 3 violins, a cello, a double bass and a piano.
They were all professionals. And they were all well-trained, hard-working Thais.
“Old bikers”.
They had practiced the song a thousand times. Even if they were woken up from their sleep, they would have played it any way they wanted.
From front to back, from back to front, in a disco rhythm, in a jazz style - whatever the client asked for...
That is what professionalism means.
But there was one thing they did not expect. One thing they were not prepared for: in the minutes before the recording, they heard the news that the Great Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama the IXth, the king of Thailand who has reigned for 70 years, will pass away on this difficultly arranged date.
The date could no longer be postponed. And everything had already been paid for.
We need to work! “We are Thais.”

This is what it became…
When the anthem was uploaded to video sharing sites a few days later, unimaginable things happened: it’s true to say that the internet exploded. And immediately everyone started making such tearful videos.
I don’t want to criticize anyone.
There were certainly people whose tears didn’t come from their hearts. However, Kanphat Srinaronk Chayanawat’s tears came from his soul.
For me, there is no doubt about it.

This is what he wrote in Thai and English under his video:
As a loyal servant, I will forever be at His Majesty’s feet!
Every moment I spent working on this video and the making of it was both a huge honor and the most defining emotional experience I have ever had.
I am proud to be Thai and very lucky to have lived in Thailand during the reign of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
Rest in peace!

PS:
Whenever I watch this video, it always makes me cry.
There is more to this clip than tears.
This video is about the King of the Thai people, his loyalty to his country, the Thai people's respect for history and tradition; everything that makes a people alive and successful.
Long live the King!
ขอทรงพระเจริญ!
