Long before Linux’s Tux or the GitHub Octocat, early software pioneers proved that abstract code needed a human face. Characters like the 1976 BSD Daemon ("Beastie") and Apple's 1983 Clarus the Dogcow paved the way, proving that personality could bridge the gap between complex engineering and everyday users. Building directly on that legacy, Duke was born in 1992. Originally created by Joe Palrang (who later worked on Shrek and other animated movies) for Sun Microsystems’ secretive "Green Project," Duke wasn’t actually designed for Java at first. He was envisioned as an interactive, smart-agent avatar for a futuristic, handheld touch-screen home device (called the Star7). While that specific hardware device never launched, Duke survived. In the early 90s, the Java team (then known as OAK) built the Star7, a handheld device with a touch screen, that paved the way for the modern smartphone. They used parts from Gameboys and TVs to build the hardware and then used Java to program the software.
