For more than 1,200 years, monks at the Abbey of Saint Gall in Switzerland collected, copied, and preserved manuscripts. Its magnificent Rococo library hall, completed in the 1760s, houses part of a collection that includes around 2,100 medieval manuscripts. While wars, fires, and political upheavals destroyed countless books across Europe, generations at Saint Gall protected works of theology, literature, music, and science. The library’s extraordinary beauty reveals how seriously its builders regarded the preservation of knowledge. A civilization’s intellectual inheritance survives because someone considers it worth protecting, even when its original authors are long forgotten.

Preserving knowledge is not just about archiving history. It is a profound commitment to future generations. Saint Gall reminds us that our collective wisdom endures only when we actively choose to treasure and safeguard it.

The 9th-century Plan of Saint Gall survives in that library as a parchment blueprint for an ideal monastery, even though the abbey was never built exactly as drawn.

And people don't understand the criteria involved in copying manuscripts: they were not allowed mistakes. The standard was like 3 then you must start that page over from scratch. It was VERY precise. Of course, they aimed at NONE.

The monks at Saint Gall didn't build those breathtaking libraries just for aesthetics they knew human knowledge dies out if you don't actively protect it. Convenience makes us forgetful; we only preserve what we truly value. So what are we actually treating as sacred today?

Imagine letting a bunch of immigrants in there... it would be burned down and used for toilet paper within an hour.
