Last night, my neighbor died while working underneath his car. He didn’t have jack stands, and the car fell on his chest. I went outside to the sound of his teenage daughters screaming and sobbing. Neighbors were desperately trying to lift the car while I tried to get the younger kids nearby away from what was happening. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but it was too late. It was heartbreaking. One moment, one safety precaution, can make the difference between going back inside to your family and never coming home. Please, if you’re working underneath a vehicle, use properly rated jack stands. Never trust a jack alone. His family’s lives changed forever last night. Please don’t take the risk.

The jack is only a lifting device. The jack stands are to hold the weight. I don't use either. I prefer plastic/resin ramps that fail very slowly for this reason.

If you cannot afford jackstands at least throw a wheel rim under it or get some 8x8 blocks and stack them.

I usually use two jackstands on either the front or the rear of the car. Jack it up by the center jack point and then a jack stand under each pinch weld. Then I lower most of the weight onto the jackstands while letting the jack keep a little tiny bit of it. That way if the jack fails, the jackstands will just take the rest of the weight. And three points of contact make it really difficult for the car to tip off of any of them.

I think I like the idea of ramps better now, even with the extra space they use

A good practice WITH jackstands: Chock the wheels with blocks of wood. Jack up the car. Place your jackstands securely. Lower the jack, but not all the way, just until the jackstands take the load. Now if they fail, your jack is a fallback safety catch.

Always put your tire under your car when jacking it up without a stand. Even if it falls. You might still have a chance

I got lucky when I began working on my own cars. I rocked a Corolla of its scissor jack while replacing some brake pads and narrowly avoided crushing my foot. Since then I use a floor jack and jack stands any time the wheels come off the ground. Never trust the jack in the trunk.

Everytime I get under my cars I pray. Never know when God says times up.

I’m a collision repair painter, there’s so much stuff working on cars that can hurt or kill you in an instant. You have to be almost comically procedural and have systems in place that account for less experienced people.

Or at the very least put the removed rim flat under your car as a last resort. Once as a kid I had a spare jack stacked on a cinder block and the block exploded and my car fell into it. Luckily I was standing next to it at the time.

I use the Jack, Jack stands, tire under the car and I give it a good shake to make sure it won’t fall before I get under.

this is one rule I have never, and will never violate for just this reason. My truck is way too heavy for my sternum. Or even my foot for that matter. So sorry you have to see this happen
