August retail sales came in stronger than expectations. Headline retail sales rose 1.24%MoM vs. 0.8% consensus and -0.5% the previous month. Year-over-year, retail sales grew 5.3% NSA. Excluding autos and gas, retail sales +1.21%MoM vs. +0.4% consensus and -0.3% the previous month.
The control group, the segment used in GDP, +1.36%MoM vs. +0.5% consensus and -0.4% the previous month. Nonstore retailers was the big driver of August’s rebound +2.6%MoM. That being said, the rebound was broad based with all but one sector higher on the month.
