After sending the National Guard and Marines to occupy California, Donald Trump is now saying our foreign enemies should “take out” Los Angeles and San Diego. He is deranged and dangerous.
Trump on War/High Prices: It's just artificial. It's a little bit high. It's a small price to pay. They can take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego…

“The purpose of punctuation is to make writing easier to read,” Louis Menand writes, “and making writing easier to read means giving greater and greater numbers of people access to the written word.” A new book by Florence Hazrat, celebrating punctuation in all its forms, makes the striking claim that the history of punctuation is the history of humanity itself. It has entered into a class of books about the mechanics of writing—to which Sarah L. Kaufman’s “Verb Your Enthusiasm” belongs. But how do we think about these sentences, words, and marks amid a current evolution in the phenomenology of reading? Authors like Hazrat and Kaufman want us to understand reading as a bodily experience, one which can transmit an author’s state of mind, or set of emotions, to our own. Menand considers the strange power of, among other things, punctuation: newyorkermag.visitlink.me/UV…

Two years ago, the most devastating storm in our state’s history tore through Western North Carolina. We still mourn the 108 North Carolinians who lost their lives during Hurricane Helene and keep their loved ones in our thoughts. Over the past two years, it has been inspiring to see our communities band together to help one another rebuild — but we know recovery can never happen fast enough. Today, Western North Carolina has still received only about 15% of the federal funding it needs — that’s wrong and we must continue fighting for more. As Senator, I will work with anyone I can to make sure our state’s western communities have the resources they need to continue getting back on their feet.

In March 1911, Lewis Hine took this photograph of Mary Ronco, a four-year-old shucker working at a seafood packing house in Dunbar, Louisiana. Mary's dress and apron are covered in dirt from the factory floor, and her hands are held tightly together. She looks directly into Hine's lens with an incredibly heavy, serious expression for a child who was only four years old. Hine was working for the National Child Labor Committee, traveling the country to expose the harsh reality of children working in American industry. Because factory owners often tried to hide these kids from the public, Hine had to sneak around with a heavy hidden camera, recording their exact names, ages, and working conditions. His photographs eventually shocked the nation and helped push forward the federal laws that finally banned child labor. Today, this powerful image is preserved in the National Child Labor Committee Collection at the Library of Congress.

In the days after Hurricane Helene, Pastor Bynum and the members at St. James AME in Asheville turned their church into a hub for food, water, and other supplies while going out into the community to care for their neighbors. It was a pleasure to spend a service with them as we mark two years since the storm. The sermon was a powerful reminder of the strength of community and the difference each one of us can make when we show up for one another.

.@SpeakerJohnson Why do you constantly lie to the American people? "No Tax on Tips" expires in 2028. The tax cuts for the top 1%? Permanent, averaging over $50,000 a year, according to the CBO. The top 10% get $14,700 a year, permanently. Nearly half of American households get less than $100 in relief from this bill. $1 trillion went to the top 1%, funded partly by $1.1 trillion cut from SNAP and Medicaid. "Border security"? A July snapshot from the government's own Deportation Data Project shows 70% of people ICE detained had no criminal conviction at all. Deported in the most cruel way. This has been a national disgrace. "Shady stock trading"? Your stock trading ban conveniently exempts the president and vice president. Trump made roughly 28,700 stock trades in 17 months, more than the entire Congress combined. That's not an oversight. That's the point. "Big government socialism"? Your administration took a 9.9% equity stake in Intel, $8.9 billion of taxpayer money buying into a private company, run by the same party that calls a public option "socialism." Big government is you becoming a rubberstamp for a corrupt president. You destroyed the House a coequal branch of government.

GOP scandals: Susan Collins took bribes. Lauren Boebert had sex with 3 staffers. Max Miller damaged his daughter's collarbone. Trump's son's wedding afterparty was paid by a Russian tied to Putin. Democratic scandal: Peltola asked staffers to feed a pet. And got mad sometimes.
SCOOP: Inside the tumult of Mary Peltola's Senate campaign in Alaska and her time on Capitol Hill. Peltola is known publicly as kind and affable. But aides recall angry outbursts, slurs and a shove. (She also required staff to feed a pet chameleon.) nytimes.com/2026/09/23/us/po…
