Today, I oversaw the signing of a landmark Framework for Cooperation between the National Bank of Ethiopia and the IFC to establish our country’s first dedicated Mortgage Refinance Company. Capitalized at 100 Billion ETB, with the IFC set to contribute a minimum of $200 million, this wholesale institution will resolve long-standing liquidity mismatches in our banking sector and unlock accessible mortgage financing across Ethiopia. This partnership is a critical step toward realizing our goal of delivering 1.5 million affordable, dignified homes for Ethiopian families while expanding private-sector participation in our financial system. Ethiopia continues to build a modern, resilient, and inclusive economy.

The Horn of Africa is one of the most affected regions in the world by climate change. This fact is well known and well reported. As IGAD, with support from our Member States and partners, we have invested in climate early warning services, management and adaptation programs to reduce the impact of climate disasters in the region. However, the stark reality is that climate finance in the IGAD region remains at a record low. During my meeting with H.E. @AbdikerM, IOM Chief of Staff, we agreed to collaborate not only on mitigating the impact of climate change on migration but also on identifying alternative financing models for regional programs aimed at development for marginalized communities. I look forward to our continued partnership in building lasting solutions for the region.

Addis Ababa’s Riverside Development is far more than a riverbank beautification project. From the Entoto to Peacock corridor to the Entoto–Kebena stretch, this is a large-scale urban transformation that extends up to 50 meters beyond the rivers, creating green corridors, public gathering spaces, walkable areas, recreation zones, and commercial spaces that are reshaping the city itself. What makes the project especially significant is its broader economic and social impact. Beyond improving the appearance and function of the riversides, it has created jobs for many people across construction, engineering, landscaping, logistics, and related sectors, while also generating opportunities for local contractors, suppliers, and businesses. The fact that so much of the work is being designed and delivered locally highlights the growing capacity of Ethiopian expertise in urban development and infrastructure. The sustainability aspect is equally important. Once dumping grounds for toxic waste and flood hazards affecting communities along the riverbanks, these areas are now being transformed into greener, healthier, and more liveable urban spaces. At the same time, the integration of commercial and public spaces demonstrates how environmental restoration and economic growth can work together rather than compete with one another. This is a long-term investment in the future of Addis Ababa as a greener, more connected, economically vibrant, and people-centered city.

The High Level Policy Dialogue (#HLPD 2026) scheduled to take place on May 29, 2026, at the UN headquarters in New York, will provide a platform to deliberate on the theme “Harnessing Water Resources for the Africa We Want.” It will bring together policymakers, Member States, Partners, CSOs, NGOs, Private Sector, women and youth etc. #Agenda2063 #Agenda2030

Borena National Park This pristine conservation area is a massive sanctuary for wildlife and tourism, serving as a vital home to various mammal species, bird varieties, and diverse plant types.

We inaugurated the Borana Cultural Center today in Yabelo town. The foundation stone for the center was laid in 2020 (2013 Ethiopian Calendar) by First Lady Zinash Tayachew, and it has now officially opened for service. Built using proceeds from the sale of the book Medemer, the center sits on 57.6 hectares of land. The center was specially designed to showcase the Gadaa system. It features a conference hall with the capacity to accommodate up to 2,000 people at a time, as well as a heritage museum and is expected to play a key role in preserving and passing on the culture, history, and philosophy of the Borana people to future generations.

Today, we officially inaugurate the new Negele Borena Geda Airport, and Ethiopian Airlines’ 24th domestic destination. Built to host advanced aircraft like the Boeing 737 Max, this modern station will immediately launch three weekly flights to catalyse local commerce, cross-border trade, and tourism. Every new runway we build bridges a gap, unlocks regional economic potential, and brings our people closer together. Our national flag carrier and pride of Africa now in its 80th year is indeed “The New Spirit of Africa!”
