Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has called on Nigerians to remain committed to prayer, patriotism and selfless service as the country prepares to mark its 66th Independence Anniversary. Speaking at the state’s Independence Thanksgiving Service, the Governor thanked God for Nigeria’s journey and 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, acknowledging the challenges while expressing optimism about the nation’s future. He commended the church for its continued prayers, stressing that peace is essential to the wellbeing and prosperity of citizens, while acknowledging the role of traditional rulers, President-Generals and community leaders in sustaining peace in diverse Delta State. Governor Oborevwori urged Nigerians to continue praying for the country and reminded all public servants that their positions are held in trust for the people and that they will give an account of their stewardship to God. Paying tribute to Nigeria’s founding fathers, he called on present and future generations to uphold sacrifice, courage and patriotism in building the Nigeria they collectively aspire to, while thanking the church, security agencies and leaders and wishing Nigerians a peaceful Independence Anniversary.

Following the intervention of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the constitution of an Administrative Panel of Inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Adeda Ekwevugbe, Deputy Director in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, organised labour in Delta State has directed workers to resume duties. The directive was issued by NLC Chairman, Delta State Chapter, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, and his TUC counterpart, Comrade Willson Asekutu, who advised workers to resume on Monday, September 28, 2026, by 8:00 a.m. Comrade Ofobruku disclosed that labour leaders had met with the Governor and confirmed that the criminal aspect of the incident was being investigated, with arrests already made. He stated that all persons found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law, assuring workers that the unions would leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of justice. He thanked workers across the state for their solidarity, assured the deceased’s family of the unions’ support, and urged workers to remain calm, diligent and committed to their duties, while appreciating Governor Oborevwori for his prompt intervention. He further stated that organised labour would collaborate with the Panel of Inquiry to ensure justice is served, while calling on workers to remain committed to effective service delivery.

The Delta State Government has constituted an eight-member Administrative Panel of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Adeda Ekwevugbe, a Deputy Director in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education. The panel, constituted in consultation with Organised Labour, is expected to work alongside the ongoing Police investigation and submit its findings within two weeks to enable Government take appropriate action in accordance with the law. The State Government also commiserated with the family of the deceased and reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of civil servants and the protection of the dignity and sanctity of life.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has welcomed the Federal Government’s emergency intervention on the Benin-Asaba Road, describing the move as a major step towards restoring a critical economic corridor connecting Delta and Edo states with the South-East and other parts of the country. Represented by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, at the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” exercise in Benin City, the Governor said the deplorable condition of the highway had caused prolonged hardship for motorists, commuters and businesses. He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, for the intervention and urged the speedy execution of the emergency works. The Federal Government said the emergency repairs are expected to restore the road within four weeks, beginning from the Edo axis, with particular attention to the Benin Bypass. It is also redesigning the entire 136-kilometre Benin-Asaba dual carriageway with reinforced concrete pavement for long-term reconstruction. The Governor also highlighted Delta’s intervention on federal roads, including the concrete rigid pavement constructed on the Warri-Sapele Road from the U-turn at the Spare Parts Market to Ohore Junction. He said the State would continue to support efforts to address critical infrastructure challenges, while commending the Federal Government’s rehabilitation of the First Niger Bridge.

The Federal Government has extended the rehabilitation of the First Niger Bridge, with critical structural works continuing to ensure the facility is safe and durable before it is reopened to traffic. The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, gave the directive during an inspection of the bridge at the Onitsha Bridge Head, noting that the vandalised bolts and nuts had been replaced while the stolen expansion joint had been manufactured and brought into the country for installation. He also ordered additional works, including structural repainting, solar-powered streetlights, CCTV surveillance linked to the Second Niger Bridge and a comprehensive assessment of the bridge above and below the water level. Representing the Governors of Delta and Anambra states, Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, commended the pace and quality of the rehabilitation, noting that the earlier directives for the replacement of damaged components had been implemented. He also appreciated motorists for their patience as the intervention progresses.

Some healthcare needs cannot wait, and some gaps cannot be left unaddressed. With new investments in specialised care and public health capacity, Delta is building a healthcare system better equipped to respond to needs within the State, bringing critical services closer to the people who need them.

Burutu Port is attracting fresh attention as Delta’s waterways open new possibilities for regional trade. With the European Union identifying the port as a strategic point for a proposed Sea Link, Burutu is positioned to strengthen its role in connecting coastal and inland markets.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to improving flood control infrastructure is delivering practical solutions to drainage challenges across Delta State. The completed 464 metre flood discharge drain in Aladja, Udu LGA, is helping to improve stormwater evacuation, protect the Bezi Road corridor and make movement easier for residents.

In a bid to strengthen leadership and governance in Delta State’s tertiary institutions, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori today inaugurated the Governing Councils of the State’s three universities and swore in Mr. Emasogbe Matthew Oghene as Administrator-General of the Delta State Civil Service. Speaking at the ceremony, the Governor charged the new council members to bring their wealth of experience to bear on policy formulation, effective oversight, and the overall advancement of the universities, while urging them to uphold fairness, transparency, accountability, and collective responsibility in the discharge of their duties. The Governor also announced major measures to improve the tertiary education system, including the construction of two 480-capacity hostels for each of the State’s nine tertiary institutions and new salary structures for academic and non-academic staff. He urged the councils to complement government support by pursuing greater financial sustainability and private sector investment for the universities.

Security in a riverine environment requires strategic support and infrastructure. At Escravos, 3,747 hectares of land was allocated to the Nigerian Navy for security-related purposes. The development strengthens the support available for security operations in one of Delta’s important coastal areas.
