BREAKING: The unemployment rate has officially hit 4.2% in September, up from 4.1% in August and above expectations of an unchanged 4.1%.
The number of unemployed rose by 78,000 to 7.109 million, while the labor force expanded by 485,000 to 170.262 million, lifting participation to 61.8%.
On the payrolls side it was ugly: 29,000 jobs added versus 90,000 expected, with July revised to a 10,000 loss and August cut to 133,000, a combined 60,000 in downward revisions.
