The siege of the city lasted until 1992. and ended with a Croatian victory and the withdrawal of the JNA into Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Yugoslav People's Army, backed by mostly reservists from Montenegro, participated in the attack. The bombardment provoked international condemnation, and became a public relations disaster for Serbia and Montenegro, contributing to their diplomatic and economic isolation, as well as the international recognition of Croatia's independence.
