I actually think the most interesting thing about Warcraft Forever is taking it into context alongside EQ Legends and the slew of remakes we've seen over the last few years.
Is it a sign that the industry can't make good games anymore?
Games have become Hollywood in the last decade. So much money is invested that the mantra becomes to play it safe rather than build a fun game. This leads to stale, watered-down gameplay that is just a regurgitation of the same game we've played.
I don’t think people understand just how insane Warcraft Forever’s outcome has been.
Vanilla WoW has strict and deliberate design. A single (even minor) change to the formula can disrupt the entire loop, effectively ruining the player experience.
The Warcraft Forever team had an extremely tight margin of error to achieve freshness and replayability while preserving the vintage Classic WoW feel, authenticity, and rewarding game design. On top of this, nearly every public survey and data point reflected a player base that wanted tons of retail-based changes to Vanilla (whoever asked for flying mounts in Classic, why dude).
With the direction Warcraft has been heading in the last decade (modernity) and the mind-boggling survey results, some deemed it unlikely that Blizzard would be able to produce Classic+ design pillars that would be passable, let alone near-perfect.
This is why so many of us are over-the-top excited. Could some things be better? As always, of course. But to take this insane moonshot and land near-target is miraculous enough for most people, and that’s why I’m ready to inject WF directly into my veins and eye sockets the moment it releases.
Obviously, the game still needs to come out but things are looking so promising that for the first time in years, I am excited to game again.
