In Dante's Inferno, people who were neutral in life are treated just as harshly as those who sinned.
These are the "uncommitted" who chose no side. They are rejected by both Heaven *and* Hell.
Lukewarm souls are made to wait forever in the "Vestibule of Hell". They're stung by wasps while they run around in pursuit of a meaningless white banner (in punishment for standing beneath no banner in life).
Even worse, their blood and tears flow from their faces onto the ground to be consumed by maggots. Why?
In Christianity, Christ's blood is shed for man's salvation, and the blood of the martyrs is considered the seed of the Church. To bleed — whether literally or metaphorically — for a worthy cause is a great act of love.
But in the case of the lukewarm, their blood merely feeds maggots. "You shall know them by their fruits," Christ says, but the only "fruit" the lukewarm produce is nourishment for worms.
Dante himself was exiled from his hometown of Florence by a rival faction after years of civil conflict. pH 1.5. That is your stomach, and the only other animals down there eat things that have been dead for days.
Everyone wants to argue about teeth. Teeth are on the outside, where a campaigner can point at them. The stomach is filed in a 2015 review nobody handing out leaflets has ever read.
So read it. Scientists pulled gastric pH from 68 species of birds and mammals and sorted them by diet. Mean pH by group:
- Obligate scavengers, the carrion specialists: 1.3
- Humans: 1.5
- Facultative scavengers: 1.8
- Generalist carnivores: 2.2
- Omnivores: 2.9
- Fish and insect eaters: 3.6
- Herbivores: 4.1 to 6.1
- Every other primate alive: 3.0 or higher
pH runs on a log scale, so 1.5 against 3.0 is roughly thirty times the acidity. You are carrying an acid bath no other ape comes close to, and your only company is the vulture and the hyena, the animals built to eat the dead without dying.
That filter is expensive to maintain. Evolution does not issue a scavenger's stomach to a fruit eater for a hobby. It issues it to kill what is living inside meat that would put other animals in the ground.
You have the stomach of a vulture and the dietary opinions of a rabbit.
