Interesting footnote: When I visited Cheyenne Mountain in 1997, it was still NORAD’s primary command center. Beginning in 2006, day-to-day operations shifted to nearby Peterson Air Force Base. In 2008, Cheyenne Mountain became NORAD and USNORTHCOM’s alternate command center and remains operational as a hardened backup. NORAD remains a joint U.S.-Canadian operation.

Relations between the United States and Canada are strained. So what happens if that relationship fractures further? What happens to Canada’s role in NORAD? I don’t know. But having seen Americans and Canadians working together inside that mountain… it’s something I’ve been thinking about.
