Candid Coffee Conversations 8/9/25
CCC is back! I hope you are sitting down and enjoying a scone with a nice cup of coffee, however you like it. We have made it to football season with a lot of buzz and excitement around this season! Additionally, basketball is down in Puerto Rico, where players are getting in some much-needed team scrimmages and bonding time to build camaraderie. Let's get into it!
Football
-Let’s talk about rankings and polls briefly…….NONE OF IT MATTERS. On-field results matter. The national media and large media corporations don’t like it when a team like Indiana breaks into the good ‘ole boys club of the upper echelon of college football. They are all betting on IU to go back to their historical woes. Cig and Co. will use all of the negativity and lack of hope to fuel the team's approach and mindset. It will be interesting where IU falls in the AP Poll, which is released Monday. Hoosiers are ranked #19 in the preseason Coaches Poll. I bet the Hoosiers will fall between #16 and-20 in the AP. We shall see!
-There have been a lot of polls or chatter asking, who is going to be the 'breakout player” this year for IU? I said this during Spring Camp, and I still stand by it. Omar Cooper Jr. is going to have a big season. His route-running ability in the middle and outside of the field is superb. He can be used in the slot, which was proven during the spring game. His ability to use his strong frame to leverage defenders to create space is impressive. He can play all positions on the field, which complements Waffle House’s game. He will have more targets and receptions this season with the attention to Sarratt, and this will already add to his red-zone touchdown ability. He’s the most underrated WR in the conference and maybe even nationally. He will have a steady pro career.
-Freshman to watch this season to make an impact. Lebron Bond (shifty, gadget, YAC ability), Kyler Garcia (he has a BIG/SEC body), and Byron Baldwin (sideline to sideline coverage/speed, ballhawk) are impressive and all had production during the preseason game. Cig has been complimentary of their play as well. I expect to see all three players in the rotation at their positions.
-Cig’s stance on scheduling and what he said to the media is spot on. We are in the most competitive conference with back-to-back national champions and multiple College Football Playoff programs. Until the SEC goes to 9 conference games, there is no need to schedule Power 4 non-conference opponents. There are plenty of big games on the schedule. Use the non-conference to build confidence and develop depth, and prepare for conference season. Playing two top 10 teams on the road, a top 20 team at home, and at Iowa is not an easy feat. Take care of business on the schedule you have, and you're back in the playoffs.
-My
#IUFB season prediction: Schedule breakdown:
Home-Old Dominion- W
Home- Kennesaw St- W
Home- Indiana St- W
Home- Illinois- W 35-28
Away- Iowa- W 28-21 (trap game. Tough environment. Oregon next week)
Away- Oregon- Here me out on this! I think the Hoosiers win this game if they are healthy after games against Illinois and Iowa. Hoosiers are also coming off a bye week to prepare. Oregon will be coming back across the country from playing at Penn State. I think Penn St. wins against Oregon. I think Cig and Co. showed that traveling out west is not an issue last year. Oregon is very talented. However, they’ll have a young QB growing through adversity next year. This is a coin flip. I like the Hoosier 31-28 on the road!
Home- MSU- W 42-17
Home- UCLA- W 35-21
Away- Maryland- W 28-7
Away- Penn St.- L 14-28
Home- Wisc. - W 31-17
Away- Purdue- W 35-10
Hoosiers will either be 11-1 or 10-2 going into selection weekend. For this to happen and to get a second consecutive CFP bid, they will need to win at least 2 of the following games: Illini, at Iowa, at Oregon, at PSU. To me, they need to beat ILLINI at home and win either at ORE or PSU to secure a bid. SEC SOS is just naturally more difficult (Media Darlings). They have to get big win in conference to wipe off any doubt vs. a 9-3 or 10-2 Florida, LSU, or even a 11-1 Miami.
Here is my CFP prediction per the napkin.
1. PSU
2. Texas
3. Clemson
4. Georgia
5. Notre Dame
6. ASU
7. Ohio St
8. Bama
9. Indiana
10. UF
11. Oregon
12. GROUP of 5 (Boise st. or Tulane)
Left out: LSU (I don’t trust B. Kelly), MIAMI, BYU, SMU
Possible Bid Stealers to watch: UOFL, IOWA ST., Illinois, TTECH.
-Lastly, the national media has made a talking point out of, “Who will be this year’s Indiana?” There is, there will be no “This year’s Indiana.” I don’t see a program going from two seasons of 4-8 and 3-9 to 11-2 with a CFP birth. However, if you’re looking for a team to sneak into the CFP, that team is Louisville. Brohm is a good coach and has his most talented team since he arrived back home in Louisville. Miller Moss can sling it, and they arguably have a top 5 backfield in the country. Additionally, they have a favorable schedule. I think they can win at Miami. They play Clemson at home at night. Then they go on the road at SMU. Their schedule has plenty of opportunities for quality wins, for being in a weak ACC conference.
Basketball
-IU is currently down in Puerto Rico getting much-needed time as a brand new team to scrimmage and spend quality time together. Early information feels positive about how the team is coming together. What we have learned from the first scrimmage is that Indiana is going to get up the floor fast, share the ball, and shoot from behind the arc. Sounds like we could be bringing back the old nickname “Hurryin’ Hoosiers” with the DeVries era.
-Though the competition was not great, the stat line in the first scrimmage was promising. Sisley leading all scorers on 9-12 shooting is great! We need him to be in the rotation. Great to see him settled in early.
-Tayton Conerway has the ability to be an ALL BIG player at PG as well as be a part of the ALL BIG Defensive team. Conerway shooting well from 3 is promising and is helpful in many aspects for his position. If he is able to knock down 3s, then this opens up his ability to get to the rim/dive and dish to shooters. The last time the Hoosiers had a PG with the ability to shoot from deep was Yogi.
-I am looking forward to the next few days, scrimmage-wise, against tougher competition. All reps are good reps for this team to continue to gel and find their footing offensively and defensively. I am most interested in seeing how IU plays against a team with more size. How will they play them offensively? So many unknowns with a new team and new system that there is a lot of interest in many different aspects.
