A government has no business deciding which news outlets are "legitimate," and then paying those 'state-approved' outlets because the moment the state creates the checklist, it also acquires the power to punish, exclude or financially starve anyone who fails its political (read ideological) test. But you should know this right? A free press is supposed to scrutinize government, not seek government certification —and free speech does not require Ottawa’s (in this case the Liberal Party's) seal of approval. Whatever benign language is used to sell it, state-defined legitimacy turns journalism into a licensed privilege, rewards compliant media and chills dissent. That's not protecting Canadians from misinformation but giving the government the machinery to decide which information Canadians are permitted to know and trust. Real democracies do not need ministries of truth. This is the company (past + present) Canada keeps with other countries who also created state machinery to determine which media are acceptable, licensed or "legitimate" include: 🔺️China: the Communist Party’s Central Propaganda Department and the Cyberspace Administration. 🔺️Russia: Roskomnadzor, which registers, restricts and blocks media outlets. 🔺️Iran: the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, which licenses publications and can revoke their permission to operate. Public Safety Canada finally saying what we’ve known for years: anti-zionism is antisemitism. That’s an important step. Veteran CBC journalist Neil Herland went to synagogue on Yom Kippur. Protesters were outside. He filmed what happened and described what it feels like to be Jewish in Canada right now. Then the CBC pulled him off air and began a disciplinary process. The CBC has refuses to explain why. For years now, I have watched journalists speak openly about racism and bigotry directed at their own communities. As they should. Why is a Jewish journalist facing discipline for doing the same? The CBC needs to answer that question plainly, including what standard it says Herland breached and whether it applies that standard equally. This goes beyond one newsroom. All Canadians, elected leaders and those entrusted with our public institutions need to decide whether they will defend a Jewish Canadian’s right to document intimidation outside his place of worship.
