For the longest time, I thought the airport security scanner had a personal beef with me. Twenty people could walk through without a beep. Then I’d step in, and there it was: a red mark on the screen. My chest. My side. My back. My ankle. My stomach. There was always somewhere that needed to be patted down. The officer would ask, “Do you have anything on you?” I’d throw my hands up dramatically, sigh loudly, and say no. I was irritated before the search even began. Not once did they find anything. I still don’t know why it happened so often. Then one day, while I was doing my usual huffing and puffing, the officer conducting the search laughed. “I understand,” she said. “I have a cousin who goes through this all the time. She swears something about her sets off the scanner.” I laughed too. It was a brief exchange, but it changed how I handled the next one. After that, when the screen showed a red mark, I stopped taking it personally. I let the officer conduct their search, then I’d go on with my day.
