We report the first full structure of the Sabiá virus spike protein—revealing how this deadly arenavirus gains entry into cells.

We also found that Sabiá’s spike shows pH-dependent receptor binding—unlike other genetically close arenaviruses.
This suggests a potential need for a secondary intracellular receptor, and a more elaborate entry mechanism than previously known.

The HERV-K spike has a role during embryonic development and is associated with various diseases like cancer, ALS, and viral infections, making it an interesting and promising drug target. Having this structure may enable the development of novel therapeutics.
