Trying not to destroy the English language or individual liberties. I'll tweet mostly about Politics. Probably. Not affiliated w/ Disney in any way.

People commenting “if CA billionaires have enough money to pay for an ad, they can pay higher taxes” understand neither taxes nor freedom (and they deserve higher taxes for themselves and less freedom).

Do you want to know what I think about the teacher pushback on scripted lessons? I think a lot of today’s teachers don’t know how to read aloud in engaging ways, and their insecurities and lack of desire to DO it lie under that pushback. (Obvs not ALL. But I would guess many.)

About once every couple weeks (sometimes every week), my girls and I have “girl dinner” (it’s meat, cheese, bell peppers, cucumbers, and baby carrots + fruit if they want) and we take turns picking an “old” movie to watch. Tonight my little P (6) picked The Rescuers.

E.g.- Teaching The Great Depression? In History, you can use the Library of Congress to have students identify images, objects, etc. from the time (AFTER explaining the crash, politics, change in living, etc.), and have students use the documents to explain how life was different

OBVIOUSLY this is very different than just being like: “Here’s Migrant Mother. Figure it out.”

I’m finding out that what I was taught was the “Inquiry Method” is…not what other people were taught was inquiry. I was taught: 1. Direct instruction from teacher 2. Independent practice concept to remember/understand level of Bloom’s 3. Pose a question for student to answer

Direct instruction on background information and context ALWAYS came first. Always. The question to answer was aimed at the evaluate/create level of Bloom’s. It was to ADD to understanding…not to have kids just “discover” on their own.

The Internet did what the Internet does. Life quotes thrown in my face. I see, I share. For your consideration:

“How will you teach your kids everything?!” I didn’t even know how my 6 year old knew that “2 toed sloths actually have 3 toes but their front arms have 2 fingers. And 3 toed sloths have 3 both places.” I googled this. It’s true. (She learned at the aquarium w/gparents!)

Neglected idea: Having the right to do something means having the right to do it TERRIBLY. If people have the right to homeschool, they have the right to do it *terribly*. Whether that offends you or not. Whether YOU do it or not. The right to do it does not dictate the quality.

Also, I have said this before and will say it again: It’s still ok to homeschool if your kids are average or below average academically. It’s OK. Not everyone actually cares about being involved in academics forever. Some of them learn how to fix washers or run businesses. …

“Academics” =\= “learning”. Just so that’s extra clear. 😉

Guys WHAT. Lucy Calkins’ fan club keeps using words like “magical” in descriptions of her teaching. Teaching isn’t magic, and if you use that word to describe it, I don’t trust your opinion *at all.*

I would guess they are trying to get ahead of Sold a Story Season 2, which debuts soon!

I care about learning, and parents are #1 factor in learning. I ALSO 100% understand parents who say: “if they’re at school for 8 hours, why do I need to cover deficits at home?!” Logically, it makes sense. So I get why parents don’t keep teaching kids after 8 hours of school.

What I DON’T “get” logically is that, if you know the school isn’t doing the job and you need to teach them extra… Why do you keep using the school?

Just a reminder: I just went in a 7 day cruise in the Caribbean with my kids (age 10, 6). You can/should absolutely travel with kids. In fact, it’s so great for them to see the rest of the world outside their hometown. Please DO IT. They need to see the world is big.

We also had a road trip that was ~17 hours across 2 days to get there. My kids had books on kindles (paperwhites, no games or internet connection), and toys/drawing things. They survived. 😉

All of the people I have seen questioning live streaming executions are the same people who DELIGHTED in re-watching Charlie Kirk’s repeated on X. You’re not outraged. It’s not the execution that’s the problem. It’s not even a death penalty that’s the problem. THAT’S the problem.
