Since this is my "professional" account I should mention: My dad was instrumental in the design, standardization, and international deployment of GMDSS: essentially the global equivalent of 911 at sea. Thanks in part to his work, thousands of lives at sea are saved each year.

Well into his 70s, he would say "I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up!" But by his 80s, I think he nailed his ultimate role: an amazing pop-pop to his grandkids.

My Dad unexpectedly passed away last Thursday at the age of 84, peacefully, calmly, in the house I grew up in. He was an inventor, a radio operator, a pilot, an entrepreneur, an amazing father and pop-pop. He never let a loving thought go unsaid. Love you, pop.

Time to un-embargo our @acm_ccs paper. We discovered that GEO satellites have been broadcasting a whole host of different kinds of traffic in the clear, including SMS and unencrypted calls from cellphones, military data, critical infrastructure, and more. wired.com/story/satellites-a…
