You don't need to be an expert, you just need to be supportive and empathetic.
ALT Navy text on a cream background with green accents. How can I support someone who has told me they are experiencing violence?
ALT Here are some things you can say: Thanks for sharing your experience with me.
That sounds like a terrible experience.
I imagine it has taken a lot of courage for you to share your story with me.
No one should have to experience what you’ve been through.
ALT Remember to… Validate their feelings about their situation
Don’t blame them or justify the violence in any way
Name what they are experiencing as violence
Emphasise that the violence is not their fault and was not caused by anything they did, or did not do
Explain that this is a societal problem which occurs across all age groups and cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
Remind them that there is support available.
