Let's game this out a little more. Zero out the county's $100m homelessness budget and put it toward a new jail.
The Maleng Justice Center (800 beds) cost $108m in 1997 (construction costs are >3x as high), so with the "savings," can fund that in 3 yrs. 2 more to build it.
We'll have a new jail in 5 yrs, and all the currently sheltered homeless people (6,500) will be unsheltered in that time. When the new jail opens, they can stuff about 800-1000 into it, leaving behind around 17,000 homeless people on the streets.
That will no doubt be great for miserable vultures like Andrea, Choe and Kevin. There will be no shortage of people in the streets to film.
Andrea, Choe and criminal fraudster (former WHS president) Kevin Dahlgren spend every day trying to shut down DESC, which is how thousands of people get mental health care and housing in this city.
It’s not perfect, but DESC is way more cost-effective than jails and asylums, which would require billions in investments to build.
* The expansion of the Washington State Hospital campus alone will cost the state nearly a billion and won’t be completed until 2029. That’s 350 beds and it’s just the capital costs—not including staff
* Incarcerating a single person in WA state costs $207 per day ($75,000 a year). Multiply that by the thousands that Andrea is proposing we lock up.
* King County’s law and justice expenditures already total over a billion, and you’ll have to scale up courts, prosecutors, and public defenders if you want to do any of this constitutionally
As much as some Manhattan Institute crank like Heather MacDonald might wish it to be, this isn’t some “one weird trick” where you just move money from one column to another and voila homelessness is solved.

Heather lands every point on restoring safety in our drugged out filthy cities. Seattle is one of the most beautiful cities in the world but decrim, defund, and diversion vs. jail or treatment has landed us #1 in homelessness growth by 418% and now #4 in death by overdose.

Months before they filed their anti-trans initiative, Brandi's anti-trans programming ramped up dramatically. It was an issue she barely talked about before that. Now, she talks about trans stuff in almost every show and posts about trans people five times a day.
Regardless of whether that's a PDC violation in the strict sense, it's definitely evidence of Brian and Steve exercising behind-the-scenes influence over her show.

Honestly what does “prioritizing laterals” mean?
Even with $50k bonuses, SPD was only fielding fewer than 100 lateral applicants and almost all of them were excluded due to something (presumably nightmarish) in their backgrounds.
Most recruits will be completely green. That’s scary.
interim chief Sayles said he agrees with Kettle on prioritizing lateral instead of new hires since they'd be deployable quicker adding "left police agencies *hopefully* with good standing, hopefully wouldn't hire a police officer running from something". lol. lmao even.

By 2028, anywhere from one-quarter to a half of patrol will be officers with 1-2 years on the job and dubious backgrounds (a lot of security guards/ cops that didn’t make it through probation at another dept)

Seattle treats vacant positions differently when it's cops.
Ghost cops (vacancies at SPD unfillable under any scenario) are treated like actually existing cops. Cutting them is "defunding." But it's fine to cut 100+ other vacant positions to fund 66 (also vacant) police FTEs.

140 to 160 officers is roughly twice as many as SPD hired in any year with a comparable number of applicants. Shon Barnes was lowering hiring standards, and Chief Sayles will likely continue this practice to fill Mayor Wilson's 66 vacancies.
