Not gonna lie, when I retired early at 56, it took a while to separate myself from my work identity. That took about a year. Now, I’m fully engaged in a new lifestyle. •I rarely use my alarm. •Spontaneous weekend trips are the norm. •Everyday is a weekend. •The calendar is wide open. I probably sacrificed too many experiences along the way, but now that I’m here, it has been well worth it.

Real estate investing has been good to me. 🏠 But it’s important to note that there is an illiquidity element to real estate. My plan was to sell my last rental this year, but the market dictated that I hold on to it for another year hoping that interest rates will fall. Interest rates are rising. My hope is that I will be able to unload the property late next year. A lot depends on the market. In the meantime I have a sizable chunk of money tied up in a home. I’d rather have it in the market.

I’m not a fan of most target date funds. High expense ratios and less control over what you invest in. But, if the convenience of these funds is the difference between a person investing or not, go for it.

$HD went public 45 years ago today. A $1000 investment at the IPO held with dividends reinvested would be worth $34 million today. According to the Wall Street Journal, $HD is the highest-returning US public stock since 1981.

Having a complex investing strategy doesn’t score you brownie points. The simpler the better. Often times better returns too. ETFs for the win.
