The ANC's electoral decline is a political warning that cannot simply be explained away through political spin. The 2024 national election saw its support fall from 57.5% in 2019 to 40.18%. That is a 17.3 percentage-point decline. The electorate deserves answers.

For years, the EFF behaved as though South Africa belonged to its political megaphone. Endless lectures, manufactured outrage and ideological posturing, but precious little willingness to listen to ordinary citizens. Now reality has interrupted the performance. The electorate has spoken, and apparently, shouting louder doesn't translate into winning more votes. What an embarrassing introduction to democracy.

MKP is certainly making the political establishment uncomfortable, and perhaps that is the most interesting part of South Africa's evolving political landscape. Political dominance is not an inheritance, relevance is not guaranteed, and the electorate does not require permission to rewrite the political script. Some political assumptions clearly need updating.
