Good cops stand up to a bad off duty detective because he assaulted a man because his young daughter dropped a candy wrapper on his property.
We are in Springfield, Tennessee and a father exposes what happens when badge-heavy egos collide with citizens with recording cameras.
Jeremiah Payne was walking down the street with his wife and young daughter when a wrapper from her candy fell on the ground near an off-duty officer’s yard. What should have been a complete non-issue instead triggered an aggressive confrontation from Metropolitan Nashville Police Detective William Thorogood.
The off duty officer immediately went on the attack by threatening to arrest Payne. Not knowing who this guy even was, Payne immediately reached for his cell phone to document the event.
When Payne began filming and requested Thorogood’s name and badge number, the off-duty officer escalated to physical force. Payne was shoved to the ground and held under the detective's weight by his neck and chest while being told he was under arrest.
Thorogood attempted to take Payne's phone and told emergency dispatchers that the family might be carrying weapons simply because they appeared to be homeless.
Payne held his ground, maintained his composure for his daughter, and kept recording until Springfield Police units arrived on scene. All while being harassed and followed by the off duty detective. The presence of marked patrol cruisers and active lenses caused an immediate retreat in Detective Thorogood's posture.
Payne provided officers on site with the story of what happened at well as video proof. The responding officers immediately approached the Detective regarding his actions and did not back down because this man is a police officer.
In the end detective Thorogood stepped forward, formally identified himself, and offered an on-camera apology to Payne and his child, openly admitting that his reaction over yard litter was completely unwarranted and admitted he was wrong in his actions as well as conduct.
In the end Payne showed to be the better man as he accepted the apology with a handshake.
That said I'm my opinion, an on-scene apology does not erase an unlawful assault under the color of authority. Off-duty officers do not possess qualified immunity to assault citizens or retaliate against those exercising their First Amendment right to record. Personally I think he should have pressed charges. Then he got to the real point, praising the Supreme Court's ruling: "Everything now is based on merit. The military, jobs, college."
That's how it should be. The kid with straight A's and a 1600 gets the seat. The strongest soldier gets the job. You earn your spot by being the best, not by checking a box.
Merit is back in America, and the left can't stand it.

Let's say the Roadster weighs about 4,400lbs (2,000 kg).
The thrusters need to push down with about 4,400lbs of force.
How does air push that hard?
Well, the classic example here is thinking of letting go of a balloon, except the air is squeezed about 300x tighter than normal.
Tesla says the car carries 600 liters of air, which works out to roughly 440 lbs of air (AKA about 70 scuba tanks' worth)
The catch is that it runs out super fast so hovering burns about 70lbs of air every second, so the car could stay up for about 6 seconds at most.
That's plenty for a jump, though!
Hopping over a row of cars takes about 2 seconds of full blast, plus a bit more to land softly.
That uses probably like 40% of the tank.
For the math geeks, here's the general calculation:
Thrust to hover = mass × gravity = 2,000 × 9.81 ≈ 19.6kN
Tesla says the car has 10 cold-gas thrusters fed by 600L of compressed air.
Air at ~300bar is ~325kg/m³, so 0.6 m³ holds about 200kg of air.
Cold air exhaust velocity is ~600m/s, so hovering burns 19,600 ÷ 600 ≈ 33kg of air per second.
That gives a maximum hover of 200 ÷ 33 ≈ 6s, realistically 4 seconds.
The jump:
To clear ~4m, you'd fire the thrusters at ~39 kN for the first half of the climb, then coast the rest.
Liftoff speed v = √(9.81 × 4) ≈ 6.3 m/s, so a ~0.64s burn using ~42 kg of air.
Doubling it for a soft landing gives ~85 kg.
That's about 40% of the tank.
