What’s next in glaucoma care, and how is it changing what happens in the clinic and the OR? Join us for the 8th Annual Doheny–UCLA Glaucoma Symposium on Saturday, September 26, for a highly interactive morning focused on the evolving landscape of glaucoma diagnosis, treatment and surgery. We’re pleased to welcome Darrell WuDunn, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at the University of Florida College of Medicine–Jacksonville, as this year’s Donald Minckler Doheny Glaucoma Lecturer. Led by course directors Vikas Chopra, MD, and Brian Francis, MD, MS, the program brings together glaucoma experts for focused presentations and discussion on some of the issues shaping practice today, including home IOP monitoring, combination MIGS, minimally invasive bleb surgery, sustained-release drug delivery, microstents, complex anterior segment surgery and management of glaucoma surgical complications. And the learning doesn’t stop with the lectures. As we approach Mrs. Carrie Estelle Doheny’s birthday on August 2, our team had the opportunity to visit her historic home at 10 Chester Place. Standing in the place where her extraordinary philanthropic journey began reminded us why Doheny Eye Institute exists today. Her generosity and belief in the power of science continue to fuel groundbreaking research, innovative education, and hope for patients around the world. Doheny Eye Institute is proud to announce that Deborah A. Ferrington, PhD, has been appointed Executive Committee Chair of the Stephen J. Ryan Initiative for Macular Research (RIMR). Established to advance research into age-related macular degeneration (AMD), RIMR brings together leading basic scientists, engineers, physician-scientists, and clinicians from around the world to share ideas, challenge conventional thinking, and accelerate discoveries that move us closer to better treatments and, ultimately, a cure. Dr. Ferrington is an internationally recognized vision scientist whose research has advanced our understanding of the molecular basis for AMD. Having been actively involved with RIMR from the very beginning, she brings deep scientific expertise and collaborative leadership to her new role as Executive Committee Chair. We also thank Srinivas R. Sadda, MD, FARVO, for his outstanding leadership as Executive Committee Chair. We are pleased that he will continue to serve on the RIMR Executive Committee, where his insight and experience will remain an important part of the initiative's future. A new publication in the American Journal of Ophthalmology by Doheny Eye Institute researchers Alberto Quarta, MD, and SriniVas R. Sadda, MD, FARVO, in collaboration with Aaron Y. Lee, MD, Chair of the John F. Hardesty, MD Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, explores both the promise and challenges of AI in ophthalmology. The article, "AI in Ophthalmic Research and Patient Care – What Are We Really Afraid Of?", examines how AI may enhance disease detection, improve efficiency, and accelerate scientific discovery, while also addressing important considerations related to transparency, bias, trust, and patient care. Researchers from the Doheny Image Reading and Research Lab (DIRRL) shared their latest work as part of the Work in Progress series, a forum designed to foster collaboration, spark new ideas, and advance vision research through open discussion. Under the guidance of Dr. SriniVas Sadda, research fellow Alberto Quarta presented "Basal Laminar Deposits in Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Extensive Macular Atrophy with Pseudodrusen-like Appearance," while research fellow Shinichiro Chujo presented "Photoreceptor Density and Geographic Atrophy Progression."
